Bowdoin College chartered 1794 by the General Court of Massachusetts, meeting in the Old State House in Boston, the District of Maine still being part of the Commonwealth. Governor Samuel Adams signs the bill.

James Gower papers

Legal documents, correspondence, financial papers, and various writs, deeds, and agreements of James Gower, his family, and related to his various positions in local government. Included are several documents related to Bowdoin College land sales for which Gower played a role as agent, as well as versions of his own will and testament with details regarding his estate.

Jonas and Seth C. Burnham papers

Scope and Content note

The collection consists of poems, essays, speeches, and themes by the two Burnhams. Most of the material was composed while the creators were students at Bowdoin College. Many pieces are heavily edited and a couple bear comments by a professor.

Pierce family collection

Scope and Content note

Family documents and papers dating from early eighteenth century Colonial America to the twentieth century. The correspondence is predominantly between family members, although other significant national figures and personal friends are represented. Documents also include legal papers regarding wills and estates, property and the homestead in Baldwin, Me., personal journals and diaries, and other records of local and state history.

The collection includes original documents such as letters (including Civil War and WWII), diaries, photographs and negatives, newspaper clippings, certificates, a guest book, scrapbooks, account books, charts, court cases, as well as transcriptions of letters and diaries, and research materials. There are Houlton town records, as Leonard Pierce, Sr. was a Justice of the Peace, as well as being the postmaster. Some of the transcriptions are in electronic format.
