Atherton Bernard Furlong papers
Scope and Content note
According to the notes attached to the inventory, there are two, unrelated parts to this collection. The first contains biographical and career information on Furlong and his family. The second contains information on various aspects of John Bundy Brown (1805-1881), a prominent Portland merchant and banker. It is not known how the Brown materials came into the possession of the donor. This information and inventory was done by ESM 6/88.

Biographical note
Atherton Bernard Furlong, 1849-1919, was born and raised in Greenwood, Maine. Early in life he studied singing in Boston and London. He became an internationally known tenor and returned to North America to establish the College of Vocal Art in Toronto, Canada. He was also a well-known painter and writer of poetry. He married Carletta Wellington, a well-known soprano and had four sons: Charles W. (donor of this collection); Atherton B., Jr.; Leonard; and Lewis (a boy soprano who died at 16).

Processing note
The collection was already put into archival folders and labeled. There were two folders of loose photos that were put into sleeves, although some larger photos still need sleeves.
