Scope and Content note

Primarily correspondence and legal and financial papers of John Stuart Barrows Sr., including drafts of love letters addressed to Ann Ayer Bradley. Barrow’s day and account books reflect both personal and town financial dealings, and his justice docket details issues heard as Justice of the Peace. Included in the family correspondence are letters to Georgianna Souther Barrows and Samuel Souther, her father, from various correspondents.

Biographical note

John Stuart Barrows Sr. (1791-1845) of Fryeburg, Maine, married Ann Ayer Bradley in 1820, and together they had George Barrows (1823-1904) and John Stuart Barrows Jr. (1825-1849). Barrows Sr. was a lawyer and served as a Justice of the Peace. George Barrows married Georgianna Souther (1828-1914), and together they had a son also named John Stuart Barrows (1865-1943), who was a journalist and the author of Fryeburg, Maine: An Historical Sketch published in 1938.

Processing note

E. Christopher Livesay gifted these papers to MHS as part of a larger donation of material compiled over decades as a collector of Maine-related manuscripts and books. All of the material from the donation shares accession number 2023.021.

The papers arrived in folders labeled by creator and grouped by record type. A more granular arrangement was designed, incorporating information about content and dates in folder titles. Items were rehoused and the material was processed as an individual collection.
