Biographical note

The majority of these letters are from Maud Fiske Jason (186?-1978), of Portland, Maine, to her daughter Jeannette Jason (1912-1997), who lived and worked in New York City, from 1938 to around 1948. Some of the letters are from Jeannette’s father, George J. Jason, whom Maud married in 1911 (Jeannette was their only child). Other letters are from friends.

Jeannette Fisk(e) Jason was born in Portland, Maine, attended Deering High School and Westbrook Junior College, and Northeast Business College in Portland. She worked in the Foreign Department of Brown Company, which was located at 500 Fifth Avenue, and also 420 Lexington Ave in the Graybar Building in New York City. While living in the city, Jeannette initially lived at the Nevada Apartments, located at 2025 Broadway, and later at 250 West 71st Street. She received an A.B. from Hunter College in 1944 (night school). Jeannette married Daniel Rose in 1948. She eventually worked as a business accountant for Oxford Paper Company.

Processing note

Most of the letters from Maud are undated, so the envelopes, with postmarks, were retained. The letters did not come in any order, so were organized by year, and are kept together with archival paper. There is a folder of undated letters – with some research possible dates could be determined.
