Flash drive with transcriptions available (contains photographs, letters, documents, some of which are in this collection but more are added). This flash drive is in the source file. Also in the source file is donor correspondence with MHS and her family, which summarizes the family history, with bibliographical sources.

Biographical note

Rufus Deering (1818-1896) was the founder of Rufus Deering Lumber in Portland, Maine. He married Deborah Eastman, daughter of Ezra and Mercy Philpot Eastman of Limerick on May 18, 1843. They had six sons and four daughters, including Emily Deering Jordan (1844-1925) and Ella Deering Orr (1854-1943). Ella's daughter Dora Deering Orr (1885-1968) married Philip Lyon Warren Sr. (1884-1964), son of Jennie Lind Duncan and George L. Warren Jr. Their children were Helen Warren, Philip Lyon Warren, Duncan Orr Warren, John F. Warren.

Rufus Deering was involved in the Maine Free Baptist Association (as treasurer).

The Eastmans lived in Limerick, the Warrens lived in Westbrook, the Orrs lived in Harpswell, and the Deerings lived in Portland and along the coast.

Gift of Rebecca Warren, October 12, 2021 (acc. no. 2021.120), the great, great, great granddaughter of Rufus and Deborah Deering. (Rebecca's mother, Helen Davidson Warren, was the daughter-in-law of Dora Orr Warren, who was the daughter of Ella Deering Orr, daughter of Deborah Eastman Deering.)

Processing note

Many of the documents and letters had numbers on them, "HO...," which were on sticky notes -- these were removed and notations made on archival paper folded around the letters.
