Biographical note
Joseph Clark Jr. (1818-1883) of Caratunk, Maine, was the son of a lumberman. He married Esther Moore and together they had three children. Clark invested in several business ventures in the area. He was a merchant, railroad investor, caretaker of a portion of the Canada Road, and a hotelier. He purchased the Hotel at Caratunk from Joseph Spaulding in 1854, and he and his family ran it for years. In 1876 he moved to West Forks to operate the Forks Hotel.

Processing note
E. Christopher Livesay gifted these papers to MHS as part of a larger donation of material compiled over decades as a collector of Maine-related manuscripts and books. All of the material from the donation shares accession number 2023.021.
This material arrived with items sleeved and housed in two binders, labeled with the name of the creator and the record type. The order of the material was largely retained, though all items were removed from sleeves and housed in archival folders. The material was then processed as an individual collection.
