Correspondence with deputy marshals at Augusta, Bath, Belfast, Castine, Eastport, Ellsworth, Machias, Warren, and Wiscasset, Me., and with district attorneys, customs officials, and judicial officers; bills, receipts, and abstracts of expenses and compensation for court officers; letters of marque and other papers relating to privateers active in the War of 1812, disposition of prize vessels, and prisoners of war; bills, receipts, and accounts relating to transportation, security, and support of prisoners; and miscellaneous legal papers. Privateer vessels represented include the Dash and Young Teazer, of Portland, Me.; Fox, of Portsmouth, N. H.; Grand Turk, of Salem, Mass.; Leo and Monmouth, of Baltimore, Md.; and Viper, of New York City.

Biographical note

Dr. Thomas Gilbert Thornton was the U.S. Marshal for the Maine Territory during the years Maine was under Massachusetts’ control. He lived in Saco, Me. and Thornton Academy, founded in 1811, is named for him in honor of a generous financial donation he gave the school.
