Scope and Contents
Series includes Lewis' surveying records, correspondence, and papers, many related to the separation of Maine from Massachusetts in 1820, as well as correspondence and papers related to his role as Cumberland County Justice of the Peace. Also included are Lewis' copies and accounts of the separation process, including state financial records, the negotiating of a treaty with the Penobscot Nation, and Lewis' role as Surveyor General and in inventorying ordnance and military stores.
